As you can probably tell, understanding sports massage is never as simple as learning one technique or type of modality ... or just "working deep." A sports massage therapist who understands the three key principles of sports massage should be able to apply the appropriate treatment at the appropriate time. Every sports massage therapist should ask himself or herself the following questions before beginning a session:

On the road with the WTA is intense but energizing! I have traveled to Paris, Madrid, Istanbul, Monterrey, Acapulco as well as sites in the U.S. The day generally begins at about 7:00am with breakfast, followed by a team meeting. On the first day, we cover every player as well as their individual needs before and after a match. We arrive onsite in the training room one hour prior to play—work can include anything from a quick warm up of a shoulder to cutting tape for an athlete to prepping sports drinks or ice and towels.

Several mechanisms for deep massage’s natural stress-relieving effects include its ability to dilate blood vessels and also lower activity of the limbic system (including the hypothalamus), which is responsible for autonomic nervous system regulation and cortisol secretion. Massage has been shown to improve relaxation by boosting activity of the parasympathetic nervous system, as measured by heart rate, blood pressure and heart rate variability. (8, 9)

Research published in the Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness reported findings of a positive trend for deep tissue massages in regard to improved athletic recovery and performance. The most beneficial type of deep tissue massage for athletes is considered to be “sports massage,” which is commonly performed prior to athletic events to help warm the body and prevent injuries or immediately after to improve recovery.
Balance your yin and yang energies with our hot (yang) and cold (yin) stones. The heat increases circulation and relaxes muscle tissue while the coolness reduces inflammation and flushes out toxins through your lymphatic system. Combined with Shiatsu and Thai massage strokes, acupressure and reflexology make this our most effective and popular treatment.
Swedish massage therapy is probably one of the more relaxing and therapeutic massage techniques. It involves the use of the hands, forearms and elbows to work the superficial muscles. It's designed to promote relaxation, increase oxygen flow in the body and rid the body of toxins. This is a great massage to get if it's your first time getting a massage or if you get massage only once in a while.
Posterior interosseous syndrome. Physiopedia explains that posterior interosseous syndrome is a compression of the posterior interosseous nerve, which is located near the shaft of the humerus and the elbow, that may result in paresis or paralysis of the thumbs and fingers. Though cryotherapy, ultrasound, dry needling, and other modalities often help with this condition, so too does deep tissue work that is focused on the thoracic outlet, pectoralis minor, triceps, brachioradialis, and other surrounding areas.

I’ve had allot of body work over the last 30 years. I found Paul to be the best body mechanic I have yet encountered. I’m a very active muscular athletic guy that carries a lot of tension, history of injuries, and I don’t recover like I did when I was in my 30’s. I came to Paul with misaligned posture, limited rotation in my neck, frozen shoulders and lower back, stiffness and pain. Paul started with a methodical analysis of my lifestyle, posture and flexibility. He worked through all of my joints meticulously, having pinpointed problem areas, combining deep tissue release, stretching and joint manipulation. He took his time and ran overtime. I left in better shape than I have been in a long while, joints aligned, range of motion highly improved, and flexibility restored to my shoulders, neck and hips, pain relieved. If you’re looking the best body mechanic and very real tangible results, you have found your therapist. Seriously, the results have been profound. I’ve reported “good” for ambiance because I didn’t notice, I was there to get fixed and got it.

The researchers also note there are psychological benefits for athletes receiving massages, which other research shows can include improved focus and confidence. Although more research is still needed on a long-term scale, both tissue healing and the psychological effects of massages are areas that seem promising for both professional and recreational athletes.
One theory is that muscle knots may be caused by something that goes wrong at the “motor end plate” — where a nerve ending attaches to a muscle cell.9 We don’t know why this happens, or what exactly goes wrong, but there is circumstantial evidence that motor end plates are the “point” in trigger point. That evidence is too complex and controversial to review properly here. It is explored in detail in my book. Some research has suggested that it may actually be possible to physically destroy the motor end plate with strong massage, thereby inactivating the trigger point.10 When it regrows — these are microscopic structures, it doesn’t take them long to heal — the trigger point may be gone.

What sets deep tissue massage apart is its ability to impact deeper layers of muscle and tissue. This also means that getting a deep tissue massage is more about stimulation than relaxation. If you have regular aches and pains due to bad posture or stiffness/soreness because of the nature of your work, deep tissue massage can help relieve the pain and soreness. But before you book an appointment, talk to your massage therapist about specific areas of your body that need relief. Also, keep in mind that a massage is not a complete treatment in itself. For acute pain and chronic conditions, consult your doctor first.

Like massages, chiropractic care can be beneficial for lowering pain and improving recovery. It’s also been shown to lower stress, headaches and more. One way that chiropractors help treat pain is by lowering mechanical compression and irritation of spinal joints, which can send nerve signals throughout the body that increase inflammation and irritation.

One of the things we get asked about often here at Araya Beauty during or immediately after some of our more intense massage treatments is ‘it it supposed to hurt?!’ and the answer, quite frankly, is ‘yes’! If done correctly, a deep tissue massage should invoke some feelings of initial pain, often follwed by a couple of days’ oreness or even mild bruising; it’s not for the feint-hearted but as the saying goes; “no pain, no gain”!
I am leaving this message here because there is nowhere else I can leave it. I am currently moving my business from pleasant grove to Salt Lake City. As soon as I have a space I will be honoring all the groupons I have yet to get to.. I appreciate your patience. Everything should be in order by May. I will post the new address right here once I have one. I apologize for the inconvenience.
Being in a happy and relaxed state of mind will enable anyone to be a better care giver for others. This is especially true in spousal relationships where self care can often be overlooked or passed over with the onslaught of home and work pressure that inevitably builds up. Getting a couples massage is a great way for a couple to show one another that they care about each other’s personal health and well being. Not to mention, massage is well known to aid in the release of the body’s feel-good hormones like oxytocin and dopamine which can help get couples in the right state of mind to be more caring and loving towards one another.
For starters, you bear in mind the things described above that tend to cause ugly pain, and you avoid that kind of therapy like the plague. Then you look for some clues that painful pressure is okay. Here are at least three reasons why unpleasantly intense pressure might be therapeutic — “bad pain,” but not ugly. In each of these situations, it might be acceptable to tolerate sensations so intense and painful that the only thing about them that is pleasant is the part where it stops.

“It is your body, your session, your outcome,” advises Rotenberger. “There’s a fine line between pain and discomfort, and it’s unique to the individual.” What’s more, deep pressure is not the same as deep tissue. It’s a common misconception, Rotenberger explains, and in reality, a therapist that is muscle-specific needs to exert little pressure to be effective.
Deep muscle massage also eases stress and tension; this relief can have a positive effect on blood pressure. People who have had a deep tissue massage reported a reduction in their systolic pressure; sometimes by more than 10.4 mm Hg while their diastolic pressure dropped an average more than 5 mm Hg. Deep muscle massage may help increase the patient’s body’s ability to produce serotonin, which is the hormone responsible for Happiness and good feelings.
In sports massage, the massage therapist generally concentrates on a specific problem area that you present, usually associated with some sort of sports activity, such as running, tennis, or golf. The most important thing with sports massage is that you find a specially-trained massage therapist who has mastery of a wide range of techniques and knows when to use them. In the past, many spas used to put sports massage on their menu as a way to appeal to men. As spas have become more sophisticated, however, they realize they shouldn't list sports massage unless they have some therapists with specialized training.

Sports massage is the specific application of massage techniques, hydrotherapy protocols, range of motion/flexibility protocol and strength-training principles utilized to achieve a specific goal when treating an athlete. Notice my use of the phrase, "specific application ... to achieve a specific goal." So, how do you decide what application and goal is appropriate for a particular treatment?
Since ancient times, hot stones have been used for both physical and spiritual healing. Hot Stone Massage not only dispels tensions and soothes the soul but also enhances lymph flow, removes toxins, and fortifies the immune system. The treatment causes blood vessels to dilate, leading to improved circulation and consequently improved oxygen, nutrient, antibody, and protective cell supply to the area of the body under the stones. It is extremely effective for joint problems, back pain, and sore muscles.

My experience was the same as a prior reviewer. We must have had the same masseuse. I do heavy weight lifting and carry all of my stress in my shoulders. I have been feeling super stressed lately and really needed a good deep tissue massage. I chose this place based off the reviews on yelp. I booked a 2 hour deep tissue massage. My masseuse was an older gentleman. I was very specific with what I wanted and where I needed focus both on the paper I filled out and verbally. I was stretched with medium to light pressure for. 2 hours. The area I needed work on wasn't even touched. I've had deeper Swedish massages from a student. This was supposed to be deep tissue. It. Was. Not.
The University of Maryland Medical Center reports that deep-tissue massage is more effective and affordable for relieving chronic pain than conventional medical remedies. Because deep-tissue massage increases the flow of blood through through the body, it helps reduce the inflammation that causes pain. Deep-tissue massage can also help alleviate muscle tension that is often a side effect of chronic pain by loosening the tight tissue clusters.

Swedish massage was invented by a Swedish fencing instructor named Per Henrik Ling in the 1830s. When he was injured in the elbows, he reportedly cured himself using tapping (percussion) strokes around the affected area. He later developed the technique currently known as Swedish massage. This technique was brought to the United States from Sweden by two brothers, Dr. Charles and Dr. George Taylor in the 1850s. The specific techniques used in Swedish massage involve the application of long gliding strokes, friction, and kneading and tapping movements on the soft tissues of the body. Sometimes passive or active joint movements are also used.
Reflexology is one of the most used alternative therapies in Denmark. A national survey from 2005 showed that 21.4% of the Danish population had used reflexology at some point in life and 6.1% had used reflexology within the previous year.[14] A study from Norway showed that 5.6% of the Norwegian population in 2007 had used reflexology within the last 12 months.[15]

Ashiatsu Barefoot Massage From the Japanese words “ashi” (foot), and “atsu” (pressure), this ultimate deep-massage therapy is performed with bare feet. As the Practitioner uses overhead bars for balance, their feet apply soothing strokes and deep pressure to offer relief to chronic pain and stress. This massage induces relaxation, releases sore and tight muscles and stimulates the circulatory system. 60/90 Minutes     $118/$154

Take it slow. Remember, the inner and outer charts are for people experienced with foot reflexology. Wait until you feel comfortable with the basics before trying to fully understand how to work the inner and outer charts. You may want to meet with a foot reflexology specialist or consider taking classes if you're interested in the inner and outer charts.[11]

By stimulating reflex points on your feet, hands, face and ears, reflexology subtly impacts the whole body, affecting the organs and glands. A simple reflexology routine that works on just the feet can help you or a loved one to drift off to sleep naturally. There are nearly 15,000 nerves in your feet alone, one of many reasons that foot reflexology is so calming, soothing and effective.

A good massage is truly a treat and offers many health benefits, but as you've noted, massage places tend to offer lots of options on their services menus. In fact, there are over 200 different massage techniques and types, all treating different needs and providing various benefits. Let's break it down. Here are nine of the most popular types of massages and when you might want to choose them.
Previous research has showed that reflexology can reduce the peripheral neuropathy of a patient who suffers from type 2 diabetes mellitus.31 76 patients ranged from 40–79 years old were listed from public health centres in Busan City. Tactile response to monofilament and intensity of the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy were used as the variable outcomes in this study. Tingling sensation and pain were reduced and tactile was more sensitive to 10 g force monofilament.32 The author added that the reflexology can be used as one of the interventions for encouraging foot care in patients who have diabetes mellitus.32 It also can be measured based on glycaemic control and nerve conductivity which show improvement with reflexology.31
When you think of a massage, you probably think of soothing music, a gentle brush of hands softly kneading the stress from your shoulders, maybe even of a loved one offering to rub your back after a long day at work. While some massages can be soothing, and rely on gentle touches to work out a client’s stress or anxiety, there are other massages that have a little more grit to them. For example, the Deep Tissue massage, which is very similar in style to the Swedish massage, utilizes some of the same techniques as its much gentler cousin; Deep Tissue massages, however, are designed to focus on the deeper layers of muscle tissues and fascia, the protective layer that surrounds muscles and joints. Working out these harder to reach muscles will require more pressure, making the Deep Tissue massage slightly uncomfortable, gritty and highly effective.
The prime purpose of sports massage therapy is to help alleviate the stress and tension which builds up in the body’s soft tissues during physical activity. Where minor injuries and lesions occur, due to overexertion and/or overuse, massage can break them down quickly and effectively. Above all, it can help prevent those niggling injuries that so often get in the way of performance and achievement, whether one is an athlete, ardent keep-fitter or a once a week jogger.

Reflexology also known as "zone therapy", is an alternative medicine involving application of pressure to the feet and hands with specific thumb, finger, and hand techniques without the use of oil or lotion. It is based on a pseudoscientific[57] system of zones and reflex areas that purportedly reflect an image of the body on the feet and hands, with the premise that such work effects a physical change to the body.[58]
Sandals, shoe inserts, foot-massage devices and a steering wheel cover based on reflexology theory are being marketed. As far as I know, no such product has a plausible rationale or been scientifically tested. Any medical claims made for such devices would make them "medical devices" under the law and therefore illegal to market without FDA approval.
Pre-event and post-event massage therapies are tailored for distinct purposes. Pre-event treatment is used as a supplement to an athlete’s warm-up to enhance circulation and reduce excess muscle and mental tension prior to competition. It is tailored to the needs of the athlete and his/her event and can be relaxing or stimulating as appropriate. Post-event massage, on the other hand, is geared towards reducing the muscle spasms and metabolic build-up that occur with rigorous exercise. Various sports massage techniques enhance the body’s own recovery process improving the athlete’s ability to return to training and competition, and reducing the risk of injury.
The swedish massage was created in the 18th century by Per Henrick Ling, who incorporated his knowledge of physiology and gymanstics, along with Chinese, Roman, Greek, and egyptian techniques. This massage is a full body treatment and includes long strokes, kneading motions, friction, as well as stretching.  Originally called the Swedish Movement Cure.
A typical reflexology session runs from thirty to sixty minutes. Shoes and socks are removed, and the client is made comfortable, usually by sitting or reclining. Some reflexologists offer a foot bath at the beginning of the session, however, no lotions or oils are used. Pressure is applied in thumb-and-finger “walking” patterns, resulting in gentle stretching and massaging of specific zones of the hands and feet that are thought to correspond to body organs. Simple self-care instructions may be discussed at the completion of the session.
Anyone who routinely stretches their physical limits through movement such as running, cycling, hiking, swimming, dancing, tennis and other racquet sports, strength training and aerobics can benefit from a massage. There are others who does strenuous activities in a day that is not normally classified as exercise. Examples are mothers with small children, gardeners, and others who use their bodies strenuously in their work.

Swedish massage helps the body heal itself by physically manipulating and stimulating the body’s circulatory and lymphatic systems. This works to energize and help eliminate toxins in the body. Also, through Swedish massage, a high level of relaxation can often be achieved, and this relaxation can help prepare the body to act as an open, receptive vessel in which healing can more rapidly occur.

Thank you for explaining the difference between a deep tissue massage and a firm pressure massage. The place I go to offers different techniques and I have been wondering what the difference was between those two. Good to know that a deep tissue massage uses very little to no lubricant so the muscles can be hooked and grabbed. That one sounds like a really great option.

Deep tissue massage uses many of the same movements and techniques as a more classic superficial massage. The difference is that the pressure will generally be more intense, and concentrated on areas of tension and pain. The strokes are the same, but the movement is slower and deeper. At certain points during the massage, most people find there is usually some discomfort and pain. It is important to tell the therapist when they hit a tender spot and if any discomfort you experience is outside your comfort range. Due to the focused nature of the session, the treatment can become intense at times.
Ugly pain in massage therapy is, by my definition, never okay. Ugly pain is often caused by things that are not going to offer even minimal, delayed benefits, and may even be dangerous. It’s important to be able to spot ugly pain for what it is and completely eliminate it from any therapy you’re receiving. What kinds of handling may cause “ugly” pain?

Chiropractic care realigns the spine for optimum health and wellness. In the process of your treatment, especially if you seek care after an injury or if you experience chronic muscle tension, your body builds up bands of painful, rigid tissue in your muscles and ligaments. Deep tissue massage breaks down this rigidity to relieve your pain and allow an improved range of movement.

During the 1990s, I observed at least seven foot reflexologists at work during health expositions. In most cases, the process appeared to be an ordinary prolonged foot massage with little communication between the practitioners and their clients. But at one exhibit, the practitioners claimed that they could reduce stress, cleanse the body of toxins, increase circulation, assist in weight loss, and improve the health of organs throughout the body. On another occasion, I underwent a 15-minute session in which the practitioner felt my foot for diagnostic purposes and then massaged it for "therapeutic" purposes. During the previous year, I had had severe shoulder pain caused by an inflamed tendon that was rubbing against a bony surface inside my left shoulder joint. Thorough medical evaluation had determined that the appropriate treatment was arthroscopic surgery in which a drill is used to shave the bony area that was impinging on the tendon. The reflexologist claimed that he could detect the shoulder problem by feeling my left foot, that it was caused by stress, and that pressing on my foot—perhaps for a few sessions—could solve the problem. His "treatment," which lasted about 10 minutes, consisted of massaging the foot and from time to time, pressing hard on the ball of my foot, a procedure that was quite painful. The "treatment," of course, did absolutely nothing to help my shoulder. A few months later, I had the surgery, which cured the problem immediately and permanently.

Keep in mind that reflexology is not a substitute for medical treatment, but is a supportive measure. There are two reflexology points on the feet that may help with knee pain: 1) Spine reflex point on the inside portion of the feet from the edge of the heel to the neck of the big toe. 2) Knee reflex point, one inch below the ankle bone in the small, soft triangular section.

Did not get the deep tissue massage that I was expecting. I ordered 90m of deep tissue but all I got was more of a stretching session. My specialist was an older guy who stretched and then just held positions instead of using any strength. My friend who was next to me had a woman who did a lot better.  My guy never asked me if it was ok and I thought he was going to change it up after 15m. I would not go back as it wasn't what I was expecting. I really needed a proper massage after snowboarding in Snowbird.  Don't expect to get it here or just make sure that your specialist can adapt.
“A couple of years ago, a friend told me about the team of massage therapists at The Wellness Center (TWC). I had a positive relationship with another therapist at that time, so I didn't book an appointment at TWC for quite some time. When circumstances changed, and I found myself looking for a new therapist, I immediately turned to TWC. I booked an appointment with one of the therapists over a year ago, and have since worked with several others. Each therapist brings their training and specialization as well as their own unique approach to massage into each session. I really appreciate that. So, whether I need a gentle massage or more robust deep tissue work, I get what I need each and every time. They also offer other services and modalities, including acupuncture and chiropractic. I haven't tried either of these, but I've heard great things from others who have. The space is really nice and the location is convenient (their offices are located over the Glendale Whole Foods). AND here's what I really appreciate: there are typically appt times available that fit my schedule. Love that about the Wellness Center!"
Chronic back pain. The American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM) reports that 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain, with is more than those afflicted with diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, and cancer combined. Additionally, back pain is the most common type of pain reported, accounting for 27 percent of all chronic pain cases. It is also the leading cause of disability in Americans who are 45-years-old or younger. Research has found that deep tissue massage can potentially help ease this pain, offering these individuals a chance at a higher quality of life.
In Swedish massage, the person to be massaged lies on a massage table and is draped with a towel or sheet. It is a full-body massage treatment, except in areas that are contraindicated or where the client requests not to be touched. Aromatic or unscented oil or lotion is used to facilitate the massage movements. Each session usually lasts 30-60 minutes. Depending on the client's preferences, a massage session may involve the use of several or all of the following basic techniques: effleurage, petrissage, friction, vibration, and tapotement.
"I had so many great massages from a variety of massage therapists! Each one I saw was very professional and provided excellent therapy. The hours and location are extremely convenient and I am usually able to get a next day appointment. The front desk staff has always been very warm and welcoming. I would highly recommend The Wellness Center to anyone!"

You’d hope this sort of thing would be rare, but it’s not. Readers regularly tell me about massage therapists who do not ask them what they want, who dismiss their patients’ concerns about pressure, and who ignore signs that their clients are in pain. They display a “doctor knows best” arrogance — ironic for an alternative health care professional — imposing their own idea of the “right” intensity.
During the 1930s and 1940s massage's influence decreased as a result of medical advancements of the time, while in the 1970s massage's influence grew once again with a notable rise among athletes.[10] Until the 1970s, nurses used massage to reduce pain and aid sleep.[22] The massage therapy industry is continuously increasing. In 2009, U.S. consumers spent between $4 and $6 billion on visits to massage therapists.[23] In 2015, research estimates that massage therapy was a $12.1 billion industry.[24]
Diagnosing or treating disease would constitute the practice of medicine and would be illegal for anyone who does not have a professional license to do these things. Although many diagnose and treat disease, I am not aware of any prosecutions. In some states that license massage therapists, unlicensed reflexologists might also be prosecutable for practicing massage therapy without a license [11].
Massage used in the medical field includes decongestive therapy used for lymphedema[10] which can be used in conjunction with the treatment of breast cancer. Light massage is also used in pain management and palliative care. Carotid sinus massage is used to diagnose carotid sinus syncope and is sometimes useful for differentiating supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) from ventricular tachycardia. It, like the valsalva maneuver, is a therapy for SVT.[52] However, it is less effective than management of SVT with medications.[53]
